Angry Bull Trails
Overview
Angry Bull Trails is a purpose-built mountain bike destination under construction around Tenterfield in the New England / Northern Tablelands of NSW. At full build-out it will deliver around 174 km of singletrack across four distinct zones, all within 15 km of town, threading through granite country, state forest and national park. As of May 2026 around 55+ km of Stage One trails have been cut, and the first trails are targeted to open in Winter 2026 (June 2026), with final approvals being worked through.
What makes the project unusual is its structure. Angry Bull Trails Ltd is a not-for-profit social enterprise (ABN 83 647 296 713). Stage One is funded by more than
2 million in government grants — $4.1 million from the NSW Regional Tourism Activation Fund and $8.2 million from the Australian Government's Growing Regions Program — and revenue from trail use and the in-town Trail Centre will be reinvested into youth training and employment pathways for the Tenterfield region. Construction is led by Trailworx (the main contractor) with Common Ground Trails awarded contracts for The Yards Bike Park and Currys Gap trails in Stage Two.
The network is designed to be unusually inclusive: approximately 60% of the trails are designed to be adaptive-accessible, with wider corridors, attention to gradient/flow, and accessible trailheads. The Trail Centre in central Tenterfield is nearing completion and will house Tenterfield's first accessible public lift, a large community deck, rider facilities including bike washes and BBQs, a cafe and a visitor centre.

- Fire-danger / total-fire-ban impact: Tenterfield sits within high-risk bushfire country; expect closures on Total Fire Ban days during summer (Nov–Mar)
- Snow / alpine season: Frosty winters at ~840 m elevation but rarely snowed; trails ridable year-round
- School-holiday surge: Once Stage One opens (winter 2026), expect strong NSW/QLD school-holiday demand given Brisbane / Gold Coast accessibility
