Butterfly
Overview
Butterfly is one of three mountain bike trail networks managed by SCUM (South Coast United Mountainbikers) in NSW Forestry Corporation land south of Nowra. It is the easternmost and most rugged of the three SCUM networks (Coondoo → Superbowl → Butterfly), sitting in Currambene State Forest about 25 minutes drive south of Nowra and roughly 2 km / 5 minutes beyond Superbowl along the same forest road.
Butterfly is a single ~5.5 km clockwise singletrack loop, hand-built in the "old school" style by SCUM volunteers and used as a State-level XC race course. Despite its short length, the loop packs a wide variety of terrain into one lap — fast technical rock descents, short sharp pinch climbs, sustained switchback climbs, and rewarding flow downhill sections — earning a difficulty rating of Intermediate (blue) with technical features that push toward advanced. The trail is rated by SCUM as their toughest XC offering.
The trailhead is a rough clearing beside Butterfly Road. There are no toilets, no running water, no food, no rubbish bins. This is a "bring everything in, take everything out" venue; SCUM explicitly warn that in wet weather Butterfly Road beyond Superbowl may only be passable in an AWD or 4WD vehicle. Free to ride, year-round, dawn-to-dusk per Forestry Corporation conventions for the surrounding State Forest network.

Best Season & Conditions
- Peak riding season: Autumn through spring (Apr–Oct). South Coast NSW summers are hot, humid and prone to afternoon storms; winter conditions are mild and tend to firm the trail surface.
- Wet-weather impact: SCUM explicitly ask riders not to ride when trails are wet or muddy to protect the hand-built surface. After heavy rain, Butterfly Road beyond Superbowl can require AWD/4WD access — passenger cars may not make it in.
- Fire-danger / total-fire-ban impact: Currambene State Forest can close to public access on Total Fire Ban days or during nearby hazard-reduction burning. Check Forestry Corporation NSW alerts before driving down. As of mid-May 2026, Butterfly has been closed by SCUM following hazard-reduction burn impacts in the surrounding forest, with damaged trees being assessed by Forestry NSW; check SCUM Facebook/Instagram for current status before travelling.
- Snow / alpine: Not applicable.

History & Background
- Butterfly is SCUM's "old school" XC trail — hand-built by volunteers and used over many years as the State-level XC race course in NSW Mountain Bike calendars (XC State Series rounds have been held nearby with Butterfly listed as ride-out terrain alongside the Superbowl event area).
- The May 2025 AusCycling NSW/ACT XCO State Series Round 1 was hosted by SCUM at Superbowl, with Butterfly described as an adjacent network "5 minutes / 2 km from the Superbowl event area" — confirming Butterfly's continued role as part of SCUM's broader event footprint.
- The Butterfly Trailforks region is identified as
butterfly-19741 (Trailforks blocks WebFetch — URL captured, not contents verified line-by-line).
Recent News & Updates
- May 2026: Butterfly is reported closed following hazard-reduction burn impacts, with Forestry NSW conducting damaged/dangerous-tree assessments. SCUM also advise the section of Butterfly Road between Superbowl and Butterfly should be avoided due to dangerously damaged trees. (Source: SCUM website status block accessed 2026-05-19.)
- Track Work Day: Saturday 23 May 2026 at 1:30 pm — meeting at the Superbowl Constrictor Carpark (Butterfly is part of the same volunteer programme).
- 2025 AusCycling NSW/ACT XCO State Series Round 1: Hosted by SCUM at Superbowl on Sunday 31 May 2025; Butterfly mentioned as available for camping/use 2 km from the event area.
