Davies Creek MTB Park

Overview

Davies Creek MTB Park sits in the Lamb Range on the Atherton Tableland, ~13 km off the Kennedy Highway from Mareeba and roughly an hour from both Cairns and Atherton. The trails — currently ~26 km of mostly green and blue cross-country singletrack — are hand-cut and maintained by the Mareeba Mountain Goats Inc, a not-for-profit local club that has been progressively building the network on Queensland Parks and Forests land since the 1990s (the area was originally nicknamed "Transfield" after the Transfield-built high-voltage transmission corridor that crosses many of the trails).

What distinguishes Davies Creek from the Cairns rainforest parks (Smithfield, Atherton) is its rain-shadow open eucalypt woodland — bloodwoods, stringybarks, she-oaks, cycads and grass trees — sitting on a decomposed-granite base that drains exceptionally well. The trails ride fast and flowy with minimal manufactured features, loose-gravel sections, rock outcrops and a handful of creek crossings; old-school natural singletrack rather than machine-built berm-and-jump. The granite base makes it the FNQ wet-season insurance policy: when Smithfield and the rainforest parks close out after heavy tropical downpours, Davies often dries enough to ride within a day.

The club's 2024–25 "Destination Davies" campaign (funded by a A$95,430 Gambling Community Benefit Fund grant) brought rock-armouring on the most weather-sensitive sections, upgraded signage with GPS emergency markers, a defibrillator, and a longer-term concept plan to add 60–80 km of new trail including flow trails and an international-grade XC race circuit. Annual events that pass through include the Croc Trophy and the Not-So-FN-Epic 6 hr.

Address: Davies Creek Road (off Kennedy Highway), ~13 km south-east of Mareeba, QLD 4880. Trailhead reached via ~2 km of unsealed but 2WD-friendly road off the highway turnoff.
Region: Far North Queensland — Atherton Tableland / Mareeba district.
Drive times: ~1 hr from Cairns (~60 km via Kuranda Range); ~15 min from Mareeba; ~1 hr from Atherton; ~4 hr from Townsville.
Public transport: None — car only.
Parking: Free, unsealed/gravel car park at the MTB trailhead (separate from the Davies Creek Falls picnic-area trailhead further along the same road).

Best Season & Conditions

Peak riding season: April–November (the FNQ dry season). Cool dry mornings, low humidity, blue skies.
Wet-weather impact: Granite base drains fast — Davies often opens again within a day or two of even significant tropical rain when rainforest parks stay closed. Individual trails may be temporarily closed after major weather events; club posts status on Facebook.
Fire-danger / total-fire-ban impact: Park may close on high-fire-danger days at QPWS discretion; check parks.qld.gov.au park alerts.
Snow / alpine: N/A — tropical lowland-upland.
Summer (wet season, Dec–Mar): Very hot, humid and thunderstorm-prone. Carry significantly more water than you think; trails can still be rideable between storms thanks to the granite base.
School-holiday surge: Some traffic during southern winter (Jul) when grey-nomad and southern-rider migration peaks in FNQ; otherwise rarely crowded.

History & Background

Davies Creek National Park was gazetted in 1971 (4.86 km² original gazettal) to protect open eucalypt woodland on granite, including the 75 m Davies Creek Falls and habitat for the endangered northern bettong. It later expanded into a wider park complex including Dinden NP, Dinden West Forest Reserve and Bare Hill Conservation Park.
Mountain biking on the site dates to the early 1990s when local riders started using the Transfield powerline access corridor — hence the original local name "Transfield" for the area.
The Mareeba Mountain Goats Inc was formalised as the local club and has hand-cut, then progressively rock-armoured, the network over the following decades; trails carry MMG-flavoured names like "Bow Hunters", "Rocky Dingo", "Periodic Detention", "Stingers", "Whiskers O'Flahery".
The Croc Trophy (Australia's longest-running MTB stage race) routes through Davies Creek most years, and the annual Not-So-FN-Epic 6 hr endurance event is held at the park.
In September 2024 MMG secured a A$95,430 Gambling Community Benefit Fund grant to launch "Destination Davies" — a media campaign with Flow Mountain Bike plus on-ground upgrades (rock-armouring, signage, defibrillator, shade/seating event area).
November 2025: MMG publicly released a concept plan to add 60–80 km of additional trail (including flow trails, multi-use recreation paths connecting cultural sites, and an international-grade XC race circuit).
