Duck Creek Mountain Bike Park
Overview
Duck Creek Mountain Bike Park sits in the Northern Rivers hinterland a few kilometres east of Alstonville and a short drive from Ballina. The land is private but is licensed to the Northern Rivers Dirty Wheels Mountain Bike Club Inc. (NRDW), which planned, funded, built, and now maintains the network. About 9 km of purpose-built single track radiates across the parcel, with 21 named trails ranging from beginner-friendly green flow up to expert technical/free-ride lines.
The mix is cross-country and all-mountain — fast hand-built flow, gnarly natural rooty descents, and a small free-ride zone — so it works as a one-stop venue for mixed-ability groups. All trails are sign-posted with name, direction of travel, and difficulty rating, and the network is wholly volunteer-maintained. The park is popular: roughly 50,000 annual visits against a club membership of ~450 (NRDW figures, 2023).
Facilities are deliberately minimal — a single portaloo, gravel parking for around 10 vehicles, no water, no shop, no shuttle. Riders must self-supply water and food and respect a strict left-in / left-out access rule onto the Bruxner Highway. The park is closed during wet conditions to protect the surface; current status is published on the club's Facebook page.

History & Background
- The park was a project of NRDW for "more than 8 years" before opening — planning, funding rounds, and volunteer construction.
- The current entry signage and visual identity were designed by Design Team Ink (Ballina).
- The park re-opened in January 2023 "bigger and better" after extensive rebuild work funded in part by a
22,000 grant secured through Ballina MP Tamara Smith. Volunteers resurfaced all machine-built trails, rebuilt drainage, and improved overall resilience to wet weather.
- The club also manages trails at New Italy (separate venue south of Woodburn).
