East Kowen
Overview
East Kowen is the northern half of a two-zone, volunteer-built MTB network inside Kowen Forest, a 4,670 ha commercial pine plantation about 12 km east of Queanbeyan on the Kings Highway. Together with its southern neighbour Sparrow Hill — which sits on the opposite side of the highway and shares the same car park — East Kowen offers more than 100 km of hand-cut, hardpack singletrack laced together by fire trails. The two areas are now fully interconnected; riders typically pick a signposted loop of 7 km, 18–20 km, or stitch together 27 km+ epics, and CORC has mapped a 50 km combined loop for fitter riders.
East Kowen specifically (accessed via Orchard Road from the Sparrow Hill car park) is the rougher, more climby half — its 18 km loop was built in early 2011 to host CORC's Mont 24-Hour after the 2003 Canberra bushfires destroyed Stromlo. It has since grown to a 20 km signposted loop with optional extras, plus a beginner-friendly 7 km circuit. Style is classic Canberra pine-plantation XC: flowing, tree-rooty, anti-clockwise directional, with occasional rocky bushland sections where the trails dip into native scrub. Standout trails include Kowalski's Sideshow (steep switchbacks) and Sweet Apples (fast finishing 2 km of flow).
It's a working forest, so the experience is more rustic than purpose-built bike parks: no water, no food, no mobile coverage, gated fire-trail crossings, and sections that periodically close for thinning and clear-fell harvesting. The Kowalski Brothers Trailworks alliance — led by long-time trail builders Alan and Paul Kowalski — has negotiated multi-year harvesting deferrals with the ACT Government to preserve key parts of the network.
Location & Access
- Address: Old Kings Highway / Kings Highway, Kowen Forest, ACT (approx. 12 km east of Queanbeyan / 30 km east of Canberra)
- Region: Kowen Forest / Queanbeyan-Palerang
- Drive times: ~20 min from Canberra CBD, ~15 min from Queanbeyan, ~3 hr from Sydney
- Public transport: None — car only
- Parking: Free dirt car park on the south (Sparrow Hill) side of Kings Highway; park on the right-hand side only (same side as the Sparrow Hill gate). East Kowen is reached by riding west along the highway shoulder ~100 m then onto Orchard Road
- Coords: -35.325, 149.349 (DB value; matches Kowen Forest centre)
Best Season & Conditions
- Peak riding season: Year-round; autumn (Mar–May) and spring (Sep–Nov) generally best. Summer can be hot and dusty.
- Wet-weather impact: Hardpack singletrack holds up reasonably well; some sections become greasy after rain.
- Fire-danger / total-fire-ban impact: Forest access may be restricted during high fire-danger periods; campground closes on severe-fire-danger days.
- Snow / alpine season: No snow closures — sub-alpine.
- Operational closures: Sections close periodically year-round for thinning and clear-fell harvest operations. Signage at gated roads — heed it (logging trucks). Riders cited in 2018 for ignoring closure signs during active logging.
Managing Body & Trail Builders
- Land manager: ACT Parks and Conservation Service (Parks ACT), via Transport Canberra and City Services (TCCS). Kowen is a working pine plantation — commercial forestry takes precedence.
- Trail builder / maintainer: Volunteer-built and maintained by the Kowalski Brothers Trailworks alliance (Alan and Paul Kowalski) in cooperation with Canberra Off-Road Cyclists (CORC).
- Volunteer / dig days: Coordinated via CORC and the "Sparrow Hill – East Kowen MTB Park" Facebook group.
- Donations / membership: CORC membership via corc.asn.au.

History & Background
- Kowen Forest was first planted in 1926 and is Canberra's largest commercial pine plantation (4,670 ha).
- Sparrow Hill trails predate East Kowen — many routes derive from early Mont 24-Hour courses run on the south side.
- After the January 2003 Canberra bushfires destroyed Mount Stromlo (and its trails), CORC relocated the Mont 24-Hour race east. The race ran at Deeks Forest through 2003.
- In 2011 CORC built an 18.5 km purpose-cut course in East Kowen (north side of Kings Highway), ~60% new singletrack + existing fire trails, to host the Mont 24-Hour: 2,800+ riders / 580 teams turned out for the 2011 event.
- The East Kowen loop has since been extended to ~20 km with optional extras, plus a separate 7 km beginner loop.
- East Kowen is also a regular venue for CORC's monthly Cross-Country Series and forms a key segment of the annual Capital Punishment 100 km MTB marathon (which links East Kowen → Sparrow Hill → Central/West Kowen → Stromlo).
- The annual Kowen Forest Ride (organised by the DSMRA — a trailbike group) draws ~220 trailbike riders to the fire trails; not an MTB event despite sharing the forest.
- The Kowen Winter Trails marathon is a trail running event (organised by Wamboin Trail Runners), and is an official Six Foot Track marathon qualifier — not an MTB event. (Prior DB description incorrectly conflated this with MTB.)
- Around 2018–2019 the ACT Government's plantation-harvest schedule threatened ~70% of the volunteer-built trails over a five-year period. Through negotiation with the Kowalski Brothers alliance, Parks ACT deferred harvesting of one East Kowen allotment for a further five years and committed to opening new areas for trail relocation.
