First Turkey MTB Reserve
Note on prompt vs DB: The batch prompt described this slug as a Toowoomba park. The DB row (slug first-turkey-mtb-reserve, name "First Turkey MTB Reserve", address 249 German Street, Norman Gardens, lat/lon -23.335, 150.542) is unambiguously the Rockhampton First Turkey MTB Reserve in Central Queensland, managed by the Rockhampton Mountain Bike Club (RMBC). All curation, sources, description, and trail list in the DB are aligned with the Rockhampton park, so this research targets that park. No Toowoomba "First Turkey" exists — the prompt hint was incorrect.
Overview
First Turkey MTB Reserve is the premier mountain-bike network in Central Queensland, sitting in the foothills below Mount Archer National Park in North Rockhampton, about a 15-minute drive from the Rockhampton CBD. The reserve covers roughly 150 hectares and carries ~40 km of singletrack across more than 35 trails graded green through double-black diamond, all built and maintained by the Rockhampton Mountain Bike Club (RMBC) on Rockhampton Regional Council land.
The network is a node-based layout: a central climbing trail (Jackhammer / Finley's) feeds a series of hubs from which descending trails fan out, so riders can stack laps of similar grades without long out-and-backs. Trails are mostly hand-cut singletrack with a mix of rock chunder, dry-creek crossings and machine-finished flow sections — the most-talked-about lines are the Megatron flow trail, the technical Whitey and Leper's Leap double-blacks, and the Dirtclowns jump line. The wider precinct is undergoing a major upgrade: in January 2025 Rockhampton Regional Council unanimously adopted a First Turkey Master Plan that adds a built trailhead with toilets, bike wash and pump track, a Central Queensland-first adaptive trail circuit, and a 600-metre signature flow trail dropping from Mount Archer into the existing network.
The reserve is open year-round, free to ride, and was the venue for the 2026 AusCycling Queensland State MTB Enduro Championships — the most significant gravity event ever held outside South-East Queensland.

- Fire-danger / TFB impact: No formal TFB closure announced; surrounding bushland means fire-danger days warrant common sense.
- Snow / alpine season: N/A (tropical coastal QLD).

History & Background
- Pre-MTB era: The First Turkey site has hosted cycling activity since 1952 (when local cycling tracks were established). Hand-cut mountain-bike trails appeared from the 1990s.
- Modern reserve: Trails were progressively formalised through the 2000s and 2010s under the Rockhampton Mountain Bike Club. By the mid-2020s the network had grown to ~40 km and was being recognised by Flow Mountain Bike and Bicycle Queensland as Central Queensland's standout MTB venue.
- Master Plan (January 2025): Rockhampton Regional Council unanimously adopted the First Turkey Master Plan, committing to a built trailhead (toilets, change rooms, bike wash, pump track, skills park), Central QLD's first adaptive trail circuit, and a 600-metre signature flow trail descending from Mount Archer National Park into the existing First Turkey network.
- Events: Hosted the 2026 AusCycling Queensland State MTB Enduro Championships — first time the title was contested outside SEQ.
