Garden MTB Trail

Overview

The Garden MTB Trail is a sanctioned cross-country mountain bike network built inside the Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan in south-west Sydney. It is the only authorised mountain bike trail in South-Western Sydney and is widely promoted as the only MTB trail in the world set within a botanic garden.

The network is roughly 10–11 km of XC singletrack arranged as four progressive loops — Kids, Family, Intermediate and Advanced — that can be ridden individually for skill-appropriate sessions or linked into one ~10 km main loop. Surfaces are predominantly hand-built dirt on the rolling Cumberland Plain hills of the Australian Botanic Garden, with the Advanced Loop adding ~70 m of elevation, jumps, berms, rock gardens and rock drops (with optional B-lines).

The trail closed in May 2017 after invasive African Olive (Olea europaea subsp. cuspidata) was discovered along the trail corridor; it was progressively rebuilt and reopened from 22 December 2019 under a 2019 partnership between the Wollondilly Macarthur Mountain Bike Club (WMMTB) and the Australian Botanic Garden, with NSW Government funding and IMB Bank sponsorship. WMMTB volunteers continue to do all trail maintenance and feature additions, hosting regular monthly trail days.

Address: Caley Drive, Mount Annan NSW 2567 (Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan; main Garden entry off Narellan Road)
Trailhead: Car Park P6 – Bottlebrush Garden (signposted from Caley Drive); P3, P12 and the Campbelltown Golf Course side are alternative bike-network parking areas.
Drive time: ~45 min from Sydney CBD via the M5/M31; ~10 min from Campbelltown.
Public transport: Limited — closest stations are Campbelltown / Macarthur; from there the Garden is best reached by car or bike. The Garden itself is large and an internal cycle path runs from the main car parks to the MTB trailhead.

Best Season & Conditions

Year-round access during Garden opening hours, but the trail base is clay and the network is closed after rain until it dries — check the Garden MTB Trail Facebook page for the current "Trail Status" pinned post before driving out.
The trail also closes for scheduled volunteer maintenance days (monthly, posted on Facebook).
Magpie swooping has been noted on the Blue Loop during nesting season (Sep–Nov).
The Garden is in the Cumberland Plain — hot, exposed summers. Most riders prefer cooler months and early morning starts; the Advanced Loop has limited shade.

History & Background

Original Garden MTB Trail predates the 2017 closure and was a long-standing south-west Sydney MTB destination.
May 2017 — Trails closed after invasive African Olive was discovered along the route; weed control and rebuild required.
2019 — WMMTB and the Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan signed a formal partnership agreement; restoration began. NSW Government funding plus IMB Bank sponsorship enabled the rebuild.
22 December 2019 — First sections reopened to the public.
2020–2026 — WMMTB continues volunteer maintenance, has added features (extended berms, jumps on the Advanced Loop), and runs monthly trail days.

The trail's selling point is its uniqueness — sanctioned XC singletrack in a working botanic garden, on the southern edge of metropolitan Sydney, with all four difficulty grades on one site.
