3.4 million joint project between NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and Wollongong City Council. Stage 1 opened to the public on
Friday 5 September 2025, with an official ministerial opening by Minister Ryan Park on
15 September 2025. The network sits in the Illawarra Escarpment State Conservation Area on Dharawal Country, less than 10 km from Wollongong's CBD, and is the long-awaited legal answer to decades of informal singletrack on the escarpment.
The Stage 1 build delivers just under 20 km of purpose-built, sustainable trails across 25 named runs: 4 green (beginner), 13 blue (intermediate), 1 blue/black, and 7 black (difficult). Features include flowing downhill descents, jump lines, berms, rock features, bridges and flyovers. The setting is genuinely distinctive — pockets of rainforest, lyrebirds and gliders in the forest, and panoramic views east over Wollongong and the Pacific coast. The full network is targeted to be approximately 70 km when Stage 2 (Kembla) and the Balgownie trails are complete (construction commencing 2026, full network targeted by 2027).
Built and maintained in collaboration with the Wollongong Mountain Bike Club (which advocated for legal trails on the escarpment for years), the trails are free to ride, no booking required. The trade-off for the wild setting is minimal on-site infrastructure: pit toilets and a bike cleaning station at the trail head, no drinking water on-site, and no food. Riders bring everything.
Location & Access
- Address: Illawarra Escarpment State Conservation Area, Harry Graham Drive, Kembla Heights NSW 2526

Best Season & Conditions
- Peak riding season: Year-round — the escarpment's mild Illawarra climate means rideable conditions most of the year. Cooler/drier months (April–October) are best.
- Wet-weather impact: Trails close after heavy rain to protect the new sustainable surface. NPWS publishes closures via "Local alerts" on the trail page; the Trailforks app also receives status updates.
- Fire-danger / total-fire-ban impact: Park may close on Total Fire Ban or Catastrophic Fire Danger days — check NPWS alerts.
- Snow / alpine season: N/A — coastal escarpment.
- Wind impact: Trails close on strong-wind days (escarpment exposure + tree-fall risk).
- Roadworks (current): Harry Graham Drive is partially closed in both directions until mid-2026 for upgrades. Use Mount Keira Road to reach the Main carpark; use Kembla Heights for the Lower carpark.
- School-holiday surge: Weekends busy. Arrive early on summer weekends; no booking system.

History & Background
- The Illawarra Escarpment has carried unsanctioned mountain-bike singletrack for decades, particularly around Mount Keira and Mount Kembla. Local advocacy for legal, sustainable trails dates to the 1990s.
- 2018: NPWS launched initial community engagement on a mountain-bike strategy — 956 submissions received.
- March 2021: Targeted engagement with Mount Kembla and Kembla Heights residents (local impact concerns).
- Late 2022: NPWS finalised the Review of Environmental Factors (REF) and adopted the Illawarra Escarpment Mountain Bike Strategy.
- Early 2023: Stage 1 construction commenced at Kembla.
- 2023 – early 2025: Trails were professionally cut and shaped over roughly two years, with rigorous environmental and Aboriginal heritage assessments. Sustainable construction techniques (bridges, raised platforms, rock armouring) used throughout.
- 5 September 2025: Stage 1 opens to the public.
- 15 September 2025: Official opening by NSW Minister for the Illawarra Ryan Park and Wollongong Lord Mayor Tania Brown.
- 2026 (planned): Construction expected to commence on Kembla Stage 2 + Balgownie trails (proposed ~23 km in the Tarrawanna/Balgownie area).
- 2027 (target): Full ~70 km network complete.
- Wollongong is a UCI Bike City — the trails are part of the city's broader cycling strategy.
