Mapleton Forest
Overview
Mapleton Forest is a long-running multi-use trail network inside Mapleton National Park, in the Sunshine Coast hinterland between Mapleton township and the Conondale Range. The land sits on the Blackall Range escarpment above Obi Obi Valley and Mary Valley; rides string together QPWS-managed fire trails and short stretches of singletrack ("Magic Mile" is the most-named section) between Mapleton Forest Road and Cedar Creek Lookout, with longer loops dropping toward Cooloolabin Dam, Kureelpa Falls, and Oaky Creek lookout. The Bushrangers MTB Club have been riding here since the early 1990s and treat Mapleton as one of their regular rotation venues. [1][2][3]
The trail character is mostly cross-country, with substantial climbing on doubletrack, occasional creek crossings, and a few intermediate singletrack links. Visit Sunshine Coast's "Ride the Five" guide pegs the ability mix at roughly 47% beginner, 47% intermediate, 5% advanced across the rideable network, so it's a venue for fitness-led XC riders and adventure-leaning gravel/MTB crossover, not gravity. There are no jumps, lift access, shuttles, or commercial bike park infrastructure — what you see is what QPWS maintains as a multi-use management trail system that mountain bikers are permitted to use. [3][6]
The primary trailhead is the Mapleton Day Use Area off Mapleton Forest Road, with sealed access to within the last few kilometres and gravel inside the park. La Botiga café in Mapleton township is the de-facto post-ride spot for the Bushrangers; there's no food, water, or bike services inside the park itself. [1][3][4]
Location & Access
- Address: Mapleton Day Use Area, Mapleton Forest Road, Gheerulla QLD 4560 (some sources use postcode 4574 — both refer to the same gazetted Day Use Area off Mapleton Forest Rd)
- Region: Sunshine Coast Hinterland
- Drive times: ~30 min from Nambour; ~45 min from Maroochydore / Mooloolaba; ~1 hr 45 min from Brisbane CBD; ~2 hr 15 min from Gold Coast
- Public transport: None to the trailhead. Closest bus services run to Mapleton township (~5 km); from there it's car/shuttle/cycle in.
- Parking: Sealed-to-gravel sealed lot at Mapleton Day Use Area. Dedicated horsefloat bays. 2WD-accessible via Mapleton Forest Road (unsealed but stable). [4]
- Alternate access: Lilliponds in Mapleton township (Delicia Road) — used by the Bushrangers for longer rides extending into the park from the village edge. [1]
- Coords: -26.600566, 152.977366
Best Season & Conditions
- Peak riding season: Late autumn through early spring (April–October). Cooler, drier — best traction and visibility.
- Wet-weather impact: Creek crossings on Piccabeen and Kureelpa loops become genuine water crossings after rain; clay sections of fire trail get slippery. QPWS may close temporarily to protect trail surface and visitor safety. Check parks.qld.gov.au park alerts before driving up. [1][4]
- Fire-danger / total-fire-ban impact: Trails can close on declared days. The park sits in a fire-prone eucalypt belt; check Park Alerts.
- Snow / alpine season: N/A.
- School-holiday surge: Summer weekends busy at Day Use Area (used by walkers, riders, horse riders); arrive early.
Managing Body & Trail Builders
- Land manager: Queensland Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DETSI) — managed on the ground by Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS). [1]
- Trail builder / maintainer: QPWS for management trails. No dedicated MTB-build organisation — no evidence of World Trail / Dirt Art / Trailscapes engagement. The Bushrangers MTB Club ride and advocate for access but do not own/build the trails. [2]
- Local club: Bushrangers MTB Club — formed 1993, incorporated 1995. info@bushrangers.org / 0421 498 401. [2][5]
- Volunteer / dig days: None publicly advertised at Mapleton (Bushrangers organise community rides, not digs here).
- Donations / membership: Bushrangers club membership via bushrangers.org (affiliated with AusCycling/MTBA).
History & Background
- The Bushrangers MTB Club, one of Queensland's longest-running MTB clubs, has been riding the Mapleton Forest network since the early 1990s — predating club incorporation in 1995. [2][5]
- Mapleton State Forest was reclassified and folded into Mapleton National Park progressively from the early 2010s as part of QPWS forest tenure rationalisation; multi-use trails were retained as management roads that mountain biking is explicitly permitted on (no permit required at the dedicated MTB trails inside the National Park; older sources referencing "permits required for the State Forest" are stale).
- The day-use area also serves as a trailhead for the Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk (Ubajee Walkers Camp is part of the network), so mountain bikers share Mapleton Forest Road and a few connector tracks with bushwalkers and horse riders. [7]
- No major UCI / national-series MTB events have been hosted at Mapleton (the gravity-side Sunshine Coast events run at Parklands / Sugar Bag instead).

- 2025–2026 — No public reports of trail rebuilds or new construction. Network remains as-is: QPWS management trails plus historic singletrack inserts.
- 2024 — Bushrangers continued regular community rides rotating between Ewen Maddock Dam, Mapleton Forest, and Sugar Bag Town Reserve. [5]
