Sparrow Hill
Overview
Sparrow Hill is a long-running cross-country singletrack network inside Kowen Forest, an ACT Government pine plantation about 11.5 km east of Queanbeyan on the Kings Highway. It sits adjacent to (and shares a trailhead with) the East Kowen / Orchard Road riding area on the opposite side of Sparrow Hill Road, and together the two zones make up the Kowen Forest mountain-bike footprint — one of Canberra's three flagship riding areas alongside Mt Stromlo and Majura Pines.
The riding is fast, flowy, well-groomed singletrack laid out along the contours rather than against them, so climbs are moderate rather than punchy. Estimates of total trail length range from "at least 50 km" through to roughly 80 km of purpose-built singletrack across the wider Kowen footprint. The signposted loops most riders use are the Short Loop (~16 km), Long Loop (~40 km), Archery Loop (~15 km) and a family-friendly ~5 km loop; many riders chain links between them to build their own distance (NoBMoB, Singletracks, QPRC).
Trails are built and maintained by Canberra Off-Road Cyclists (CORC) and the volunteer "trail faeries" — long-standing volunteers Alan and Paul are most often credited. The forest is pine plantation, so the surface drains quickly and the canopy provides good year-round protection from sun and light rain. There is no mobile coverage in the forest; ride with a map or downloaded GPS. The trailhead is signposted off the Kings Highway and the gate opens onto an unsealed car park immediately behind it (QPRC, Sparrow Hill MTB-TV walk-through).
Location & Access
- Address: Sparrow Hill Road (off Kings Highway), Kowen Forest, ACT — approx. 11.5 km east of the Red Rooster roundabout in Queanbeyan
- Region: Canberra / Queanbeyan
- Drive times: ~25 min from central Canberra; ~12 min from Queanbeyan; ~3 hr from Sydney
- Public transport: none — car access only
- Parking: unsealed gravel car park immediately inside the Sparrow Hill gate (east side of Kings Highway). Use the right-hand (Sparrow Hill) side; the same car park serves East Kowen / Orchard Road on the opposite side of the road
- Coords: -35.335, 149.305 (matches DB)
Best Season & Conditions
- Peak riding season: year-round. Autumn (Mar–May) and spring (Sep–Nov) are usually peak; the pine canopy keeps trails cool in summer and protected from light rain.
- Wet-weather impact: pine duff drains well, so trails recover quickly. Some trails may close briefly after heavy rain to protect surface — check signage at the trailhead.
- Fire-danger / total-fire-ban impact: ACT Parks closes Kowen Forest sections during declared fire-danger periods and on Total Fire Ban days. Check the ACT Fire current-alerts page before driving out.
- Snow / alpine season: not applicable — sub-alpine elevation, but cold and frosty mornings June–Aug.
- Active plantation: Kowen is an active commercial pine plantation; periodic harvest operations cause trail redirections. Check trailhead signage and CORC / Sparrow Hill Facebook group for current reroutes (QPRC).
Managing Body & Trail Builders
- Land manager: ACT Parks and Conservation Service (TCCS) — Kowen Forest is an ACT Government pine plantation (Parks ACT)
- Trail builder / maintainer: Canberra Off-Road Cyclists (CORC) — "a regional lobby group ensuring access to trails and developing facilities such as Mt Stromlo, Mt Majura, Tuggeranong Pines, Sparrow Hill and East Kowen" (CORC). Long-running volunteer trail crew known locally as the "trail faeries" (Alan and Paul most often credited).
- Volunteer / dig days: organised via CORC trail-care; details on the CORC contact page
- Donations / membership: corc.asn.au — membership unlocks insurance for races and dig days plus 5–10% discount at ACT bike shops
- Contact: Parks ACT general — ForestEnquiry@act.gov.au; CORC — PO Box 667, Civic Square ACT 2608 (no public phone)
History & Background
Sparrow Hill grew up alongside CORC's broader Canberra trail-advocacy work in the late 1990s and 2000s, with most of the singletrack hand-cut by volunteers ("trail faeries") working under successive forestry-access arrangements with the ACT Government. By the mid-2000s the network had become Canberra's go-to XC venue for distance riding — a complement to the more gravity-focused Mt Stromlo (which gained its World Cup-grade infrastructure post-2003 fires) and the older Majura Pines.
Sparrow Hill / East Kowen formed the start corridor of the Capital Punishment marathon (2009–2015), one of Australia's iconic point-to-point MTB races. The 100 km event began at East Kowen near Sparrow Hill, traversed the Kowen and Sparrow Hill singletrack, then ran an urban link to finish at Stromlo Forest Park. Capital Punishment peaked at ~2,500 starters in 2009 and wound up after 2015 (Capital Punishment course, Canberra Times 2015).
The plantation also hosts the Kowen Winter Trails event (Marathon / Half / 12 km), run by Wamboin Trail Runners — primarily a trail-running event using the forestry roads and short singletrack sections, not an MTB race. (The previously-stored DB note treating it as an MTB event was incorrect — corrected below.)
Recent News & Updates (last 12 months)
- 2025–2026 — Active pine harvest operations in parts of Kowen Forest periodically cause trail redirections; current loops range 5–10 km in affected periods. Riders are directed to trailhead signage and the Sparrow Hill – East Kowen MTB Park Facebook group for live status (QPRC).
