Victory Heights Trail Network
Overview
Victory Heights Recreational Trails (VHRT) is a 60-hectare, multi-use trail network on the former Gympie Rifle Range, about 3 km from the Gympie town centre on the Sunshine Coast hinterland fringe. The forest is remnant spotted-gum (eucalypt) mixed bushland with seasonal creeks and a resident koala population that the operator actively monitors and protects.
The network is developed, signposted and managed by the Cooloola Trail Care Alliance Inc. (CTCA) under an exclusive lease from Gympie Regional Council. It is purposefully designed for non-motorised, shared-use recreation — bushwalking, trail running, mountain biking and orienteering — and is free to access 24 hours a day. The MTB layout mixes 17 km of shared-use singletrack with 14 one-way, MTB-only descents graded Green, Blue and Black, plus 5 km of fire road and a 2 km kids' bike track. A pump track, skills area, beginner jump line, large picnic shelter and a weekly Saturday parkrun (since ~2020; reached event #250 in August 2025) round out an unusually family-friendly facility for a club-run network.
For visiting riders, Victory Heights is the natural stop-over between the Sunshine Coast and the Cooloola/Rainbow Beach coast — 1 hr from Noosa, 2 hr from Brisbane, and 5 minutes off the Bruce Highway.

History & Background
- 2011: Cooloola Trail Care Alliance Inc. founded; explicit goal of securing tenure of land near Gympie suitable for MTB and other compatible recreation.
- 2012: CTCA secured a management agreement with Gympie Regional Council over 20 ha of the abandoned rifle-range site at Victory Heights.
- 2013: Council required CTCA to take exclusive possession via lease, enabling expansion across the full 60 ha of bushland that comprises the present-day facility.
- 2014–2018: Trail network built out progressively; pump track and skills area added; signage standardised; the "Trail 1–9" numbering system established.
- ~2020: Victory Heights Trail parkrun launched (Saturday 7 am, 5 km).
- 2023: CTCA web pages last archived in the Wayback Machine in March 2023; their domain has subsequently been intermittent (ECONNREFUSED in May 2026 testing).
- August 2025: Victory Heights parkrun reached event #250 — a meaningful milestone reflecting sustained community use.
The koala-protection / weed-control / revegetation work is part of CTCA's stated ecological obligations under the lease — not a separate program. The forest is presented as a conservation outcome of the recreation use, not in tension with it.
Recent News & Updates
- 2024–2025: Victory Heights Trail parkrun continued with regular Saturday events — Facebook video posts of weekly runs (e.g. 30 Nov 2024, 4 Jan 2025, 22 Mar 2025, 7 Jun 2025) and local press coverage in Gympie Today (Apr / Oct / Dec 2025). The 250th event ran on 22 August 2025.
- 2025–2026: No major trail rebuilds or closures announced in publicly accessible sources. CTCA's own website appears to be in maintenance / hosting limbo since 2023 — the council and Facebook pages are now the live information channels.
- No 2025/2026 evidence of new trail builds at Victory Heights from publicly searchable sources; the network appears stable in shape.
